Fawn Fritzen once disdained the label “feminist”, but time and experience reshaped her thinking. Reflecting on the crucial role of music in shaping society, her songwriting draws on themes of feminism, failure, and true love. Fawn embodies Canada’s diversity with her mixed cultural roots of Chinese, French, and German, and she performs in four languages. With a powerful belter's voice, she will growl out some gritty blues, then follow it with a tender ballad imbued with delicate nuance. Fawn's eclectic shows combine beloved jazz standards alongside originals, blending elements of roots and gospel into her singing, layered with candid storytelling. Fawn has two studio albums under her belt, and is the winner of the 2014 Julian Award of Excellence for Emerging Jazz Artists.
David Restivo is a JUNO award-winning pianist and composer, and the newest addition to Selkirk Music School faculty. Born in Lansing, Michigan, molded by the mountains and coasts of New England, and based primarily in Toronto since 1982, he has been a sought-after and influential figure in Canada’s jazz community since the late 1980s. Well-known for his work with Rob McConnell and The Boss Brass, the Mike Murley Quintet, and legendary songwriter Marc Jordan, Restivo has performed and recorded with such renowned artists as Dave Holland, Curtis Fuller, Mel Torme, Kenny Wheeler, Jon Hendricks, and David Clayton-Thomas. As musical and life partners, Fawn and David have a special and heart-warming chemistry in their duo shows.

From the Heart ~ A Valentine’s Day fundraising concert for Food Banks Canada
Curated/hosted via Zoom by Vancouver’s Karin Plato
4:00 pm PST
By donation
Vancouver musician Karin Plato (Joy of Jazz Concerts) curator for "From The Heart - A Valentine's Concert" has invited 24 Canadian jazz vocalists to share their talent performing live from home. Vocalists will accompany themselves or sing unaccompanied or perform with their partners. Acclaimed jazz artists, rising stars, award winners and award nominees perform together on the virtual stage singing in support of Food Banks Canada. Karin will co-host the concert with Zarina Mulla via ZOOM.
Admission to “From the Heart” concert is a suggested minimum donation of $20.00 donated directly to Food Banks Canada. Please email Karin directly between Feb 8-14 for ZOOM link to watch concert karinplato@shaw.ca
"Before COVID-19, food banks across Canada saw over one million visits to food banks each month. Since the crisis began, more people are turning to food banks to keep food on the table – many for the first time.
While we are being told to stock up on supplies during this challenging time, people who struggle with food insecurity do not have that privilege. With food donations decreasing, reduced volunteers and people filling their own pantries, food banks are struggling to keep their doors open for their communities.
That is why I’m raising money for Food Banks Canada. They have the reach to provide food and funds to a network of 650 food banks across the country during this critical time. Please support me if you can. Every gift helps!"
