Above the Arctic Circle

Greetings from Norway! I’m on a little holiday with my parents and our friend Marina.  I met up with them in Oslo and we’ve been making our way north by car over the past few days. We intend to reach the Nordkapp (aka North Cape) in a couple of days; it’s the northernmost point of Europe. After that, we’ll head down the eastern side of Finland and I’ll take leave of my parents in Helsinki. Norway is a land of colourful houses, moutains jutting up from fjords, highway tunnels, and traffic circles. (Yesterday we drove along the E06 highway and in two different towns we were obliged to navigate through 8 or 9 consecutive traffic circles! And then we arrived in Tromsø and had the mind-blowing experience of multiple traffic circles in an underground tunnel. Frightening when you don't expect it!) Almost everyone speaks English, to various degrees of fluency, but they’ve all been wonderfully friendly and sweet. In our frequent stops at gas stations, I’ve been interested to note the CD choices available beside the maps, windshield washer fluid, and licorice. The most recent music selection included Madonna’s latest album, Katie Melua, Adele, Leonard Cohen, Whitney Houston, and Roxette. It's interesting to find performance posters, too. This hotel we're in boasts a poster for a trombone concert in the foyer of a local building. A few days ago there was a poster for a dance with live music. The arts are certainly alive and well in Norway. Now it's off for a Norwegian breakfast and then we'll hit the road for Nordkapp, the northernmost point in Europe. Ser deg senere!
