I've Still Got My Health

Next up in my Cole Porter series is a song that you don't hear all that often. It's from a 1942 musical called Panama Hattie, but if you know this tune, it's probably because you heard Bette Midler sing it in the movie Beaches. And if you're familiar with that version, you know that Bette does it quite a bit faster than I do here. (Bette does love a good fast song!) I had intended to make it jauntily up-tempo, too...but, well, this is one of those things that happens with live music. I didn't count in the band and Grant started the tune a good deal slower than we'd rehearsed. But no matter! I went with it and I think it has a really great groove. Plus it let me play up the words, which is a wonderful thing with such fun lyrics. Speaking of lyrics, this song has a LOT of 'em. Many of the original lyrics refer to cultural icons of the day that are no longer familiar, so Bette's version adds new lyrics. For the show, I used her lyrics, and I also added some of Cole Porter's original lyrics back in. Then I replaced a line I didn't like with a line of my own. (Can you guess which one?) It's possible that Porter would be less than pleased. But I hope he'd forgive me, because I do love this song. [youtube="http://youtu.be/63goxVth84c"]

Ditto! :D As for the line… was it the one about succeeding in school? If so I like it! If not… I couldn’t guess! LOL

Nope! That’s one of Cole Porter’s original lyrics! Thanks for playing along and guessing, though. :)
