Miss Otis Regrets

Well, there wasn't time during the Scandinavia adventure to tell you about the Cole Porter show, since Internet access was mostly limited to short bursts at the end of long driving days. (In fact, there was excellent mobile and 3G access for most of our trip, but I didn't even bother bringing my dinosaur of a phone, so no mobile Internet for me!) The morning of the Cole Porter show, I woke up with a tickle in my throat and an ominous thick feeling in my sinuses. I decided to take a schwack of vitamin C and load up on decongestant drugs. I normally avoid decongestants, but they let me to fend off that cold for the day, and I was able to enjoy Cole Porter. (You bet that I paid the piper the next day, which, sadly, was my husband's birthday. Sorry, Michael! I still owe you a birthday fruit pizza!) Ahem, getting back to Cole Porter... We had The Old Firehall sold out the day before the show, so we were all excited about that. And it was, indeed, a spectacular evening. There were interesting new interpretations, a mix of both famous and lesser-known songs by Porter, and even some surprise instruments, like banjo and musical saw. With my theatre background, I couldn't resist throwing myself into the costuming aspect of the show, so I had different outfits for each of my three songs. Michael kindly twisted himself into a pretzel to get some video of the show. First up on the blog: Miss Otis Regrets, which was a new-to-me tune. I had originally wanted to sing Love for Sale, but one of the other gals in the group also wanted to do it, and after some good-natured arm-wrestling I realized it would be an opportunity for me to learn a new piece. After playing around with different treatments for this song, I decided to take a gospel-y approach. Let me know what you think! [youtube="http://youtu.be/yy7RZILvN-s"]
